Sarah-Jane Crawford: ‘Meghan Markle is my inspiration’

Broadcaster Sarah-Jane Crawford looks flawless even when she’s dressed down and makeup free presenting her new show on Hits Radio.

The 36-year-old star’s career has seen her ramping up the glamour on global magazine covers and reporting from the red carpet for huge American TV stations.

This is the second instalment from the exclusive sit-down interview that we did with Sarah-Jane, this time we get the low down on her hair, beauty and makeup secrets.

Hi Sarah-Jane, do you like to go make up free on radio or do you still like to get ready?

I think it will depend. Radio is so beautiful because it’s just about conversation, but we are living in a social media age. Having said that as much as it’s fun to share on social media and we did a lot of that on my show in the past, one thing I have become more keen to do on my social media channels to be a bit more authentic and post a lot more with no makeup on and post a lot more without my hair extensions in and with my natural curly hair.

When you are on radio do you go makeup free?

Radio is so beautiful because it’s just about conversation, but we are living in a social media age. Having said that as much as it’s fun to share on social media - and we did a lot of that on my show in the past - one thing I have become keen to do on my social media channels to be a bit more authentic and post a lot more with no makeup on. I’m also posting a lot more without my hair extensions in and with my natural curly hair.

Have you enjoyed bringing your curls back?

I think it’s been nice, I’ve enjoyed a bit more of a change with my hair which has been a bit more significant than just changing my hair style. I took my extensions out, which are straight, recently and I had a bit of an internal conversation. I asked myself ‘why am I always wearing straight hair when I’ve got curly hair? A lot of people love curly hair’. I had to admit that I think perhaps sometimes it’s a bit more palatable for TV and commercial value for me to have long straight hair and I do think it suits me. I am sure I will go back to it, but I wanted to fall back in love with my natural hair. To give myself an opportunity to learn how to deal with my own hair which I never really have in the recent past as I’ve only had it out for a day and as soon as I can get extensions back. Even when I’ve had my own hair out I have blow-dried it straight, so it’s been a really beautiful journey.

Have you been surprised by how profound it’s been?

It’s a transitional experience, trying new products and seeing what it looks like natural again. My boyfriend was like ‘why don’t you go for it, your straight hair is nice, but your curls are great!’ He really encouraged me so that was great. When I did the promotional shots for Hits Radio I added a clip in, but it was all curly afro and it was nice. I felt like I was going back to my youth and the look of how my hair used to be.

What has the reaction from the public been like?

I posted a picture of me with curly hair on Instagram and I put my hair in braids for the Royal Wedding - it was so popular! Someone said to me ‘are you sure you want to do that?’ and I was like ‘why not?’ I want to celebrate my ethnicity which is put some braids in! It was really liberating, and I felt proud of myself for going and having the confidence to do something with braids in my hair which I haven’t had since I was like 15. I wanted it long and straight but didn’t want to go back to the weave, so I decided to celebrate the ethnicity of having afro hair rather than always running back to the safety net – which is only a safety net in my own head - of straight hair. I was proud of myself for trying it on one of the biggest commissions that I have ever done.

How has the way you apply makeup changed as you’ve got older?

I think I’m really good at doing my makeup now, better than ever. I’ve picked up a lot of really great tips from Pauline Briscoe who is a really amazing makeup artist, she does a lot of black celebrities and women of color, she does Serena Williams and Kelly Rowland. I also use Selina Hancock who does Little Mix and is amazing.

What beauty advice have you found helpful?

In terms of beauty, I’m a little more careful about removing my makeup before bed. I try to cleanse tone and moisturize. I am a little bit naughty sometimes and go to bed with traces but I’m more aware of exfoliating. Meghan Markle loves to exfoliate, and she’s got amazing skin and is exactly the same age as me, similar complexion and I was doing a bit of research into her for a documentary I was working on and ended up reading a really interesting article by one of the makeup artists she uses. It said she’s a real fan of a heavy exfoliator and so that’s what I’ve been doing a bit more as a result. I’m a bit more up for doing face masks, going for facials. I’m also less keen on tanning my face now.

Will you use a tinted product?

I will get a spray tan, I’ve got a really good spray tan girl who will come around to my house. My boyfriend is always looking on in bemusement because she puts a tent up in the living room! I like having a tan like everyone does but for me I’m now a bit more conscious of damaging my skin with rays. Having said that I just found out from the doctor I have a really low level of vitamin D – I think the UK and people of ethnic minorities who don’t absorb the sun as much have it too.

What makeup tips would you pass on?

Practice makes perfect really. Everyone has got a different face and going back to Meghan Markle again - because I love her on so many levels – it’s not just the fact she’s beautiful but she’s smart, a social chameleon, had a career before she met Harry and we are the same age. She’s not really into wearing much make up where as I’m quite into contour. She strips it right back so lately that’s what I’ve been trying to do too.
