The Nine Causes of Aging
What is oxidative damage?
While oxygen is absolutely vital for life, the byproducts of its reactions are a major cause of aging, through irreparable oxidative damage to our cells. These byproducts, such as free radicals, are highly reactive. They have a missing electron and seek to scavenge one from other molecules. In so doing, they are liable to set off dangerous and damaging chain reactions. If they affect a cell’s DNA, they can be responsible for a wide range of degenerative diseases.
How does the body deal with oxidative damage?
The body uses antioxidants to neutralize free radicals. Antioxidants transfer an electron to the free radicals, thus stabilizing them ready for elimination.
Glutathione is the major antioxidant, produced in all of our cells, which neutralizes free-radical attackers in a continual cycle. Our glutathione levels fall with age and scientists are beginning to link many degenerative disease states to glutathione deficiency.
In what way is LUMITY’s approach to oxidative damage unique and more effective than any other?
Most antioxidant supplements tend to offer infinitesimal quantities of as many different antioxidants as possible. Our approach has been to select the most effective antioxidants available and offer them in quantities large enough to give real results.
Lumity contains the super-effective, multi-tasking antioxidant vitamins A, C and E, coenzyme Q10,
zinc and selenium, but it is l-cysteine that gives Lumity its game-changing antioxidant power.
While the best-known antioxidants can be considered as single shots against free radical attack,
l-cysteine empowers and strengthens the glutathione system, the body’s heavily-armed antioxidant
army, which, through its ability to recycle, is much more effective at overpowering free radical
Taking glutathione supplements is not worthwhile as glutathione is broken down in digestion and not
absorbed. Conversely, l-cysteine is a natural substance not found in adequate abundance in any food
that, when taken as a supplement, replenishes glutathione levels in all of our cells, thus
supporting glutathione’s unparalleled antioxidant action.
What is cellular debris?
Cellular debris is made up of all the waste products that accumulate as a result of cellular functioning.
Eliminating waste, the process we commonly call detoxification, is as important to health and the youthful functioning of the body as ensuring a sufficient fuel supply.
In youth, there is sufficient energy to fulfill all requirements, but as we age the mitochondria (the energy-producing centers within cells) start to succumb to free radical attack and they decrease in number and efficiency. An energy shortage is created. One of the first processes to suffer neglect as a consequence is detoxification.
How does the body deal with cellular debris?
In order to cope with the build-up of debris that is not getting systematically removed, cells bag up the waste and store it until enough energy is available to eliminate it.
The build-up of debris within a cell occupies space and hampers the cell’s optimum functioning. Aging and degeneration are the ultimate result.
In what way is LUMITY’s approach to cellular debris unique and more effective than any other?
A substance that greatly improves the elimination of cellular debris is acetyl-l-carnitine. It is found most abundantly in red meat, as its name indicates, and, as lower consumption of red meat has been widely recommended in the last few decades, our levels of acetyl-l-carnitine are often far below those required for optimal health. Supplementation, therefore, can make a big difference.
Acetyl-l-carnitine provides anti-aging benefits by enhancing energy production in the cell, which is needed for cellular repair and eliminating cellular debris. It helps the mitochondria produce more energy more efficiently, so that the amount of debris created is reduced and that debris is recycled or eliminated quickly.
Acetyl-l-carnitine produces great results in the brain where cells divide very slowly and so the accumulation of cellular debris is a bigger problem. In this way, Lumity offers tangible improvements in alertness, mental function and mental and physical fatigue.
What is glycation?
Glycation is the haphazard bonding of proteins or lipids with sugar to form non-functioning structures in the body called Advanced Glycation End products (AGEs).
Some AGEs are very reactive and have been implicated in diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer’s and cardiovascular disease.
Glycation damages collagen, an essential component of healthy skin, which comprises up to one-third of the body’s proteins and has a slow turnover rate. By increasing collagen’s breakdown and reducing its regenerative ability, glycation is responsible for the wrinkling and sagging common in aging skin.
Glycation also depletes the skin of its natural moisturizer, hyaluronic acid, to cause dry skin, another characteristic of aging.
How does the body deal with Glycation?
Carnosine is a unique dipeptide that the body uses to block glycation. Carnosine levels in the body decline with age. However, using carnosine supplements is ineffective as they are broken down in the digestive tract and not absorbed.
The amino acid alanine can be used to more effectively upgrade stores of carnosine in the body. Alanine is also a powerful antioxidant, an immune system booster and an important source of energy for muscle.
In what way is Lumity’s approach to glycation unique and more effective than any other?
Lumity’s use of alanine, l-carnitine and l-cysteine to block glycation and the formation of AGEs, instead of focusing solely on undoing the damage of glycation once it has already occurred, is far more effective at protecting and maintaining healthy collagen and elastin, which ensures the firmness and elasticity of the skin.
Lumity also provides the building blocks of collagen and elastin to enable the skin to regenerate and repair, thus maintaining its youthfulness through the years.
What is telomere shortening?
Every time a cell divides, its telomeres, the protective caps at the end of chromosomes, shorten. When telomeres become too short, the cell dies. The speed at which they shorten is indicative of the body’s rate of aging.
Elizabeth Blackburn, Carol Greider and Jack Szostak were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology in 2009 for the discovery of how chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the enzyme telomerase.
How does the body deal with telomere shortening?
Telomerase is the enzyme that helps maintain the length of telomeres by repairing the lost sequences of DNA at the end of the chromosome caps that is lost with each cell division. With the presence of telomerase, each dividing cell can replace the lost end of telomeres and any single cell can then keep on dividing unbounded.
In what way is Lumity’s approach to telomere shortening unique and more effective than any
While the above-mentioned unbounded growth property has excited many researchers, caution is warranted in exploiting this property, as exactly this same unbounded growth is a crucial step in enabling cancerous growth.
For this reason, we have concentrated Lumity’s action on telomere length and integrity rather than interfering with natural levels of the enzyme telomerase.
Antioxidants protect telomeres from damage and omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D are associated with longer, healthier telomeres. Lumity provides sufficient quantities of effective antioxidants and these two nutrients to protect telomeres.
What is DNA Damage?
DNA carries all the instructions necessary for a cell to function correctly. Any damage to DNA is usually repaired on an ongoing basis. However, if damage is left unaddressed, it can impair the way information is relayed and interpreted and cause dysfunctions within the cell. DNA damage can block certain functions and actually accelerate the death of a cell. DNA damage that is left unrepaired but does not kill a cell, can result in mutations when the cell divides, that is, the error is now present on both DNA strands.
How does the body deal with DNA damage?
DNA damage can be recognized by enzymes in the cell and repaired by copying the relevant undamaged sequence from the complementary DNA strand. Mutations in which neither strand of DNA contains the correct template for repair are no longer recognized as errors and, therefore, will not be repaired by the body. If the mutation impairs the survival of the cell then the effects of the damage are self-limiting. However, if the mutation does not impair the cell’s ability to survive and replicate, the multiplication of mutant cells, especially in frequently-dividing cells, can give rise to cancer. In contrast, DNA damage and mutations in infrequently-dividing cells is a prominent cause of aging and age-related conditions.
In what way is Lumity’s approach unique and more effective than any other?
Protecting and repairing DNA leads to the expression of youth and efficiency over aging and decline, by ensuring the correct functioning of cells.
Antioxidants are essential for protecting DNA from free radical damage. L-cysteine’s unrivalled ability to replenish the intracellular glutathione supply and mitigate oxidative damage provides powerful protection against DNA damage.
Proteins found in human cells called sirtuins protect DNA and prevent the activation of certain genetic switches that trigger decline and death in the cell. Turmeric and omega-3 fatty acids are sirtuin-activators that switch on healthy genes making normal cells more resilient to disease and degeneration.
What is Inflammation?
Acute inflammation is a vital immune response that protects and heals the body following physical injury or infection. Acute inflammation involves localized pain, heat, swelling and redness.
However, chronic inflammation, often silent, involves the perpetuation of the pro-inflammatory response. Chronic inflammation can result from a viral or microbial infection, environmental antigen (e.g., pollen), autoimmune reaction or persistent activation of inflammatory molecules. The persistent low-grade attack on all body tissues caused by chronic inflammation precedes and characterizes most degenerative diseases. It impairs the functioning and repair of tissues and cells and accelerates aging.
How does the body deal with inflammation?
The effects of inflammation depend upon the ability of tissues to repair. For instance, cells with little to no regenerative capacity, including neurons, cardiac cells and skeletal muscle cells, would be especially vulnerable to the effects of inflammation. In contrast, skin cells continue to proliferate throughout life; thus, wounds to the skin are usually easily healed.
Diets rich in saturated fats, trans fats and foods with a high glycemic index stimulate inflammation. In contrast, adherence to the Mediterranean diet, a diet rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans and whole grains, helps prevent chronic inflammation.
In what way is Lumity’s approach to inflammation unique and more effective than any other?
Increasing dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids generally decreases inflammation, whereas increasing dietary intake of omega-6 fatty acids increases inflammatory markers. The ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids in the typical Western diet is about 16:1, yet it is estimated that humans evolved on a diet with an omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid ratio of about 1:1. The ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids in flaxseed oil is 1:4, which helps redress the balance without the introduction of contaminants, such as heavy metals and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), often present in fish oils.
Turmeric has been proven to counteract inflammation more effectively than many drugs and it is a natural, safe substance. As inflammation is central to cancer initiation, promotion and metastasis, turmeric is a powerful ally against cancer.
Lumity contains flaxseed oil and turmeric, as well as, l-carnitine, coenzyme q10 and l-cysteine, which are all very effective anti-inflammatory ingredients.
Cellular Energy Decline
What is Cellular Energy Decline?
Most of the vital energy the body needs to function is produced in the mitochondria (tiny power-plant organelles in all cells), by burning fuel in the presence of oxygen. The byproducts of this energy generation are free radicals. Mitochondria are particularly vulnerable to free radical attack, so they decline in number and efficiency with age, leading to a chronic energy shortage.
As the mitochondria fall short in providing enough energy to fuel the body’s requirements, energy is rationed only for the most essential processes and youthful efficiency is lost. In this underpowered state, the body becomes susceptible to disease and degeneration.
How does the body deal with cellular energy decline?
Mitochondria firstly require sufficient fuel to create energy and, secondly, depend upon antioxidants to defend themselves against the constant bombardment of free radicals. If these two elements are lacking, cells have no other methods of sustaining and protecting their mitochondria and preventing cellular energy decline.
In what way is Lumity’s approach to cellular energy decline unique and more effective than any
Lumity provides the mitochondria with the nourishment they need to function efficiently, as they did in youth, and also contains the most effective antioxidants to protect the mitochondria from oxidative damage.
The 3 most effective nutrients at optimizing mitochondrial health and function are l-carnitine, coenzyme q10 and magnesium. Lumity contains these 3 super-nutrients in sufficient quantities to offer a new level of vitality.
L-carnitine is the amino acid required to transport fuel into the mitochondria, where it is used for energy generation. A natural anti-inflammatory, it also enhances the sensitivity of insulin receptors, allowing fuel to flow more readily into the cells to be converted into energy.
Coenzyme q10 is an essential component of healthy mitochondrial function. Aging humans have been found to have over 50% less coenzyme q10 on average compared to that of young adults, which has a big impact on energy levels.
The energy produced by the mitochondria must be bound to a magnesium ion in order to be biologically active. Sufficient magnesium is, therefore, essential for youthful energy levels. Magnesium is essential also to the permeability of the mitochondrial membrane and to the transfer and utilization of energy.
What is Insulin Resistance?
Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas that lowers blood glucose by promoting its transport from the blood stream into the cells. Cells, in turn, use glucose as fuel to generate energy. Over-activation of insulin, due to the composition of our diets, makes cells progressively resistant to insulin as a form of self-protection against continual bombardment.
If glucose is not allowed into the cells then it remains in the blood stream, which prompts the production of more insulin in a vicious cycle that exacerbates the problem. It also leads to increased glycation and cellular energy decline by stifling the fuel supply to the cell.
How does the body deal with insulin resistance?
Muscle cells lose their ability to respond to insulin first and fat cells are the last to become insulin resistant, so they keep on taking in extra fuel and nutrients. Muscle cells are designed to burn fat while fat cells are designed to store it. As fat cells multiply, more insulin receptors signal to the pancreas to produce more insulin – a cycle that leads to obesity and degenerative diseases.
In what way is Lumity’s approach to insulin resistance unique and more effective than any other?
Lumity contains the most effective nutrients known to combat insulin resistance: l-carnitine and coenzyme q10 help keep glucose and insulin levels in the blood lower. Omega-3 fatty acids in flaxseed oil increase insulin sensitivity at the cellular membrane by increasing the fluidity of the cell membrane. Obesity-associated insulin resistance, linked to the production of inflammatory signaling molecules in fat cells, can be sharply mitigated by l- cysteine through regulation of the genes.
Lumity also contains magnesium, an important muscle relaxant and a critical mineral required for over 300 enzymatic reactions in the cell. When the cell is insulin resistant, magnesium cannot be stored. Without the relaxing effects of magnesium, the muscles of the blood vessels contract, peripheral vascular circulation is compromised, leading to hypertension and further reduction of glucose and insulin delivery to the cell. Separately, without sufficient intracellular magnesium, the energy production cycle in the mitochondria is less efficient and the body experiences an energy shortage, which triggers accelerated aging.
What is Hormonal Decline?
Repair and regeneration is essential to maintaining youthful health and appearance. In youth, a healthy surge of human growth hormone (HGH) released while we sleep takes care of all the repair, renewal and regeneration needs of the body’s tissues. However, as we age, falling levels of HGH correspond to a loss of youthfulness and vitality and result in extra body fat, reduced muscle tissue, slow healing, lack of elasticity in the skin and reduced immune function.
Many people have advocated the benefits of hormone-replacement therapies. However, the use of substances such as GH (Growth Hormone), DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) and Pregnenolone does nothing to actually improve the body’s own natural hormonal production, but instead actually results in lower natural hormonal levels leading to the need for higher supplementation.
How does the body deal with hormonal decline?
What the body actually needs to sustain youthful levels of HGH is a unique amino-acid combination that promotes HGH release from the pituitary gland by providing the building blocks for hormone synthesis and by removing an impediment to HGH release, somatostatin, that increases with age.
This combination is l-arginine, l-lysine and l-glutamine. These three amino acids taken before sleep help restore youthful levels of HGH release to give tangible benefits, including healthy, more youthful skin; healthy lean muscle; greater strength and endurance; a stronger, more responsive immune system; stronger energy levels, especially in the morning upon waking up; and improved mental clarity and alertness.
In what way is Lumity’s approach to hormonal decline unique and more effective than any other?
Lumity’s bedtime capsules provide the effective combination of l-arginine, l-lysine and l-glutamine to promote the release of human growth hormone during the first phase of sleep in order to ensure that all the restoration, repair and regeneration the body needs is completed before the body reenters its awake cycle. Lumity bedtime capsules harness the rejuvenating quality of sleep as well as improving the body’s natural biorhythmic cycles ensuring better sleep at night and better alertness during the day.
