What is DNA Damage?
DNA carries all the instructions necessary for a cell to function correctly. Any damage to DNA is usually repaired on an ongoing basis. However, if damage is left unaddressed, it can impair the way information is relayed and interpreted and cause dysfunctions within the cell. DNA damage can block certain functions and actually accelerate the death of a cell. DNA damage that is left unrepaired but does not kill a cell, can result in mutations when the cell divides, that is, the error is now present on both DNA strands.
How does the body deal with DNA damage?
DNA damage can be recognized by enzymes in the cell and repaired by copying the relevant undamaged sequence from the complementary DNA strand. Mutations in which neither strand of DNA contains the correct template for repair are no longer recognized as errors and, therefore, will not be repaired by the body. If the mutation impairs the survival of the cell then the effects of the damage are self-limiting. However, if the mutation does not impair the cell’s ability to survive and replicate, the multiplication of mutant cells, especially in frequently-dividing cells, can give rise to cancer. In contrast, DNA damage and mutations in infrequently-dividing cells is a prominent cause of aging and age-related conditions.
