Humans Age Dramatically in Two Bursts – Here’s What to Do About It
Author: Rachel Chalmers
Time may be linear, but the aging process is more akin to a rollercoaster with two steep, perfectly timed drops. New research quoted in The Guardian found that we experience accelerated aging during two critical life stages – first around age 44, then around age 60. Professor Michael Snyder, Stanford University researcher and senior author of the study, explains, “We’re not just changing gradually over time. There are some really dramatic changes [at two stages]… it turns out the mid-40s are a time of dramatic change, as are the early 60s – and that’s true no matter which class of molecules you look at.”
It’s not just menopause...
The Stanford University study, published in Nature Physics, observed thousands of different molecules in 108 adults aged 25-75. Not only did findings suggest that all molecules in the human body experience accelerated aging around age 44 and 60, but this could also explain why spikes in certain health issues tend to make an appearance at these ages, from musculoskeletal problems to cardiovascular disease.
And while rapid aging in women has been brushed off as ‘just menopause’ in the past, these findings suggest that cellular aging bursts are the true culprit. Dr Xiaotao Shen, researcher at Nanyang Technological University Singapore and first author of the study, explains, “This suggests that while menopause or perimenopause may contribute to the changes observed in women in their mid-40s, there are likely other, more significant factors influencing these changes in both men and women.”
While the study’s findings seem to paint a bleak picture, you can take control of the brush and paint a better one. Aging varies greatly from person to person, and lifestyle factors account for up to 80% of your biological age, according to Dr Nichola Conlon, a PhD biochemist working with cellular aging company, GlycanAge. Dr Conlon is a regular guest on Glycanage and Absolute Collagen’s new podcast, What’s My Age Again, hosted by comedian Katherine Ryan – and Conlon reveals tried-and-tested methods to reduce biological age, from eating 30+ plants per week to building a better sleep routine.
To help you navigate aging bursts, we’ve rounded up our top 5 tips, including taking our Morning & Night supplement, to help you look and feel your best at any age…

1. Eat the Rainbow
It likely comes as no surprise that diet is linked to better health outcomes as we age, and the company leading the world’s largest nutrition study, Zoe, suggests that eating at least 30 different plants a week can reduce the symptoms of cellular aging. A plant-rich diet boosts gut microbiome diversity, ultimately reducing the likelihood that age-related illnesses will rear their ugly head. To squeeze 30 plants into your diet (this includes fruits, vegetables, legumes, spices, seeds and nuts), try adopting a Mediterranean diet (a diet rich in plants and healthy fats), or asking your greengrocer for a bag of the best of the season.

2. Get Moving
Not only can exercise strengthen the musculoskeletal system and cardiovascular system – both known to decline significantly with age – but weight-bearing exercise can be particularly beneficial to women navigating perimenopause, menopause and post-menopause. Women in their mid-40s and beyond are especially susceptible to bone deterioration and osteoporosis, but exercises like jogging, weight lifting and Pilates are known to delay onset of the condition, according to the Royal Osteoporosis Society. If you’re new to exercise, it’s never too late – begin with a brisk walk around your neighbourhood and work your way up to a visit to your local gym.

3. Build a Better Sleep Routine
Scientists aren’t ‘sleeping on’ this information any longer – sleep is officially one of the largest (if not the largest) contributors to health and longevity. Not only can sleep impact cognitive function, physical health and overall wellness, but insufficient sleep has been linked to conditions like cardiovascular disease, obesity, depression and Alzheimer’s, according to Cleveland Clinic. To get the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep each night, try building a sleep routine – minimise exposure to screens, keep your bedroom cool and avoid alcohol or caffeine for a few hours before bed. 4. Quit Your Vices
Smoking, vaping, drinking alcohol – even indulging in ultra-processed foods – are hard on our delicate bodily systems, increasing chronic inflammation and affecting how we look and feel as we age. While inflammation is a healthy response to illness or injury, chronic inflammation can occur with age, making us more susceptible to age-related health conditions. Now is a better time than ever to swap a harmful vice for a not-so-harmful one, and experts suggest that making a ‘swap’ may increase your chances of sticking with the new behaviour. Try replacing a cigarette with a coffee, swapping sugary drinks with sparkling water or sipping on a mocktail instead of a pint.

5. Choose a Smarter Supplement
Dr Sara Palmer Hussey, a PhD biologist and Lumity’s founder, developed our Morning & Night supplement with healthy aging at its heart. By carefully selecting 28 powerful Vitamins, Minerals, Amino Acids, Adaptogens and Omega 3s, Sara developed a supplement to support the body’s changing needs. After years of research and independent clinical trials, our groundbreaking Morning & Night supplement was born – teeming with ingredients like Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Zinc, L-Carnitine, Co-Enzyme Q10, Cysteine and Turmeric, all known to play a role in cellular protection and regeneration.
Last year, we launched our partnership with GlycanAge, the “only biological age test that accurately measures your unique response to life changes.” We asked participants to join our #feelgoodstudy, taking a biological age test before and after taking Morning & Night. The results spoke for themselves, with many seeing a reduction in their biological age, and one Morning & Night subscriber, Ms. Ball, writing, “I’ve been taking Morning & Night for a few years now and I could not get by without it…
I recently had a GlycanAge test done to check how all my internal organs, my immune system, etc. were working and mine came back at 43! Ten years younger than I am. Lumity has given me the protection I could only have dreamt of before.”
